The Pakistani military has reported that the Taliban launched an “unprovoked heavy weapons attack” on its border outposts. The Pakistan Armed Forces, in a statement released on social media on Saturday, claimed they responded with counterfire, killing more than 15 Taliban militants and inflicting substantial damage on their fighters. According to Pakistan’s military, the clash resulted from an attempted infiltration allegedly backed by Afghan Taliban elements.
However, the Taliban provided a different narrative, stating that the attack was in retaliation for recent Pakistani airstrikes on Afghanistan’s Paktika province. The Taliban claimed these strikes, which targeted a refugee camp in the Barmal district, killed 46 people, including women and children. The Taliban’s spokespersons insisted that they were targeting “malicious elements” across the border but did not confirm whether the attack was directed at Pakistani security forces.

This escalation has deepened the rift between Islamabad and the Taliban, whose relations have been growing increasingly strained. Pakistan has long accused the Taliban of sheltering militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a group responsible for deadly attacks on Pakistani forces. Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the TTP has escalated its attacks, with Pakistan alleging that Afghan authorities are providing a safe haven for TTP militants—a claim the Taliban government denies.
On Saturday, Pakistan’s military reiterated its position, stating on its official X account that it had thwarted infiltration attempts from militants allegedly linked to the Taliban. In response, the Taliban denied the allegations, accusing Pakistan of violating Afghanistan’s sovereignty with its cross-border airstrikes.
The recent clashes come amid growing regional instability, with cross-border violence increasing in recent months. Both Pakistan and the Taliban have exchanged accusations of provocations and violations, and analysts warn that further escalation could damage already fragile relations.
